Dog owner Lawrence Miller was charged with a vicious dog violation, battery and disturbing the peace, police said.

At around 8:44 p.m. July 15, officers were dispatched to a call about a fight in the front yard of a home in the 2200 block of South Pond Street, police said.

As an officer tried to break up a fight between two men, he was attacked by a large dog that belonged to one of the two men and was bitten in the knee, police informed.

The officer shot the dog three times trying to defend himself, police said.

Police said the officer is recovering and would join work soon.

The dog has survived.
